Not now Pirates, the zoo and two moons

The walls of Pirate fandom will now start to crumble.
At 54-55 Pirate faithful —mostly the new fair-weather types (including myself) — will start to throw figurative rocks at the franchise. They should have done this, traded for him and so forth. Local radio pundits have asked fans not to storm the walls yet. They say .500 baseball is still a good mark for this team. But Pittsburgh fans are spoiled with championships. We have had a glimpse of what Pirate baseball can be — and we like it. If the Buccos fall apart now it will be worse than if they had been bad all year. Because the winning spell would have been nothing more than an illusion, or a tease. It’s not too late. But summer’s almost gone. Read the standings here.

— The Pittsburgh zoo again welcomed Somerset County folks to their cages for a unique visit. Only America’s County residents were guests Wednesday night. Photos are in today’s Daily American and here.
